Help centerMoney and paperwork Works today

Is this a scam?

Send your assistant a text, an email or a letter that worries you. It tells you the warning signs and what to do next.

Works today

Nothing to connect. You only text your assistant.

What to text

  • I got this text. Is it a scam? (send a screenshot)

  • Someone called saying they are from my bank and I need to move my money. Is that real?

  • This email says I won a prize. What should I do?

  • A man on the phone says my computer has a virus and wants to connect to it. Is that normal?

  • I already clicked the link. What do I do now?

Steps

  1. Do not click the link. Do not call the number in the message. Do not reply.
  2. Take a screenshot of the message, or a photo of the letter.
  3. Text it to your assistant and ask: "Is this a scam?"
  4. Read the warning signs it finds. Common ones: a rush, a prize, a threat, a request for a code, a gift card or a password.
  5. To check, call the company yourself with the number on your card or your bill, not the one in the message.
  6. You can report a scam at ReportFraud.ftc.gov, or in Spanish at ReporteFraude.ftc.gov.

Example conversation

You:Screenshot: "Your package is on hold. Pay $1.99 here."

Is this a scam?

Your assistant:

It has three warning signs: it rushes you, it asks for a payment, and the link is not the real post office address. I would not tap it.

You:

What if I am really waiting for a package?

Your assistant:

Go to the store or the post office site yourself and type in the tracking number from your receipt. Do not use the link in the text.

This is an example. The words your assistant uses will be different.

Make it stick

  • When a message makes you hurry, slow down. Ask first.
  • No real company asks for a code, a gift card or your password by text or phone.

What it will not do

It cannot be sure about every message. It tells you the warning signs and the safe way to check. If you already gave out a card or bank number, call your bank right away at the number on your card.

Your money

This is for organizing and explaining only. It does not pick investments and does not give tax or legal advice. For those, ask a licensed professional. Never text bank passwords, card numbers or full account numbers. Cover them in photos.

Demo notice

During a demo, do not send passwords, card numbers or private customer details. Read the demo rules.
