    • I just got the Forest app to help me focus. Give me one small step and how many minutes it takes, and I will plant a tree in Forest for that long. At the end of the day I will send a screenshot of my Forest. Then tell me what I got done and the first small step for tomorrow.

Forest and your assistant are not connected. Your assistant only knows what you show it in a screenshot.

What to text

  • I need to clean out the garage and I keep putting it off. Break it into small steps.

  • What is the first step? Make it something I can do in 5 minutes.

  • Help me turn this into a 20 minute task: (name the task)

  • Give me the least I need to do to have a kitchen I can use. Then what I could do after, if I feel like it.

  • I did step 1. What is next?

Steps

  1. Text the task and why it feels hard.
  2. Ask for small steps, with how long each one takes.
  3. Ask: "What is the first step?" Do only that one.
  4. Text "Done" and ask for the next step.
  5. If a step is still too big, say so. It will cut it smaller.

Example conversation

You:

I need to clean out the garage and I keep putting it off. Break it into small steps.

Your assistant:

Here are small steps:
1. Bring 3 trash bags and 2 boxes to the garage. 5 minutes.
2. Fill one bag with clear trash. 15 minutes.
3. Put things to give away in one box. 15 minutes.
4. Sweep one corner. 10 minutes.

Start with step 1 only. Text me when it is done.

You:

Done.

Your assistant:

Good. Step 2: fill one bag with clear trash. Set a timer for 15 minutes and stop when it rings.

This is an example. The words your assistant uses will be different.

Make it stick

  • Ask for the first step only. One step is easier to start than a whole list.
  • Check in after each step. Telling someone you finished helps you keep going.
